Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of her groundbreaking social history The Girl and the Game (2002), M. Ann Hall updates her lively narrative of how women resisted masculine hegemony in Canadian sport and, in turn, how their efforts were opposed and sometimes supported by men. The second edition of The Girl and the Game begins with an important new chapter on aboriginal women and their interaction with early sport and ends with a new chapter on how trends and issues facing contemporary women in Canadian sport have their origins in the past. Other new sections focus on gender and the residential school system, the promotion of women's track and field, the 1928 summer Olympics and the Matchless Six, and aboriginal sportswomen. As in the first edition, Hall introduces her audience to more obscure Canadian female athletes rather than focusing her discussion on household names. The introduction to the new edition has been updated to reflect the content changes in the narrative. To increase appeal to the course market, chapter titles are more descriptive, the text has been revised to include more subsections, and the 52 black and white images are placed throughout the text.

Fellas betta watch out, because the Girls in the Game are taking over!” –LaJill Hunt, author of Drama Queen and No More Drama A collection of explosive stories handpicked by the undisputed “queen of hip-hop fiction,” Girls in the Game presents an all-women crew of urban-lit divas. The game here is survival, and every ghetto-hardened gangsta in these tales does what she’s gotta do to make it on–or off–the mean streets. Call them what you will, but until you’ve faced their reality you’ll never know what you would do if you were in their pumps. Just remember: It’s a dirty game, and women are usually the best players. “The game ain’t to be told but sold. If that’s so, the women in Girls in the Game should be millionaires!” –KaShamba Williams, author of Mind Games “She’s baaaaaaaack! Nikki Turner has returned, bringing with her the new divas of urban fiction. These ladies raise the bar as they chronicle the streets like never before. Get ready for a literary treat.” –Tracy Brown, author of White Lines

Book excerpt: 2007 Alan Merriam Prize presented by the Society for Ethnomusicology 2007 PEN/Beyond Margins Book Award Finalist When we think of African American popular music, our first thought is probably not of double-dutch: girls bouncing between two twirling ropes, keeping time to the tick-tat under their toes. But this book argues that the games black girls play —handclapping songs, cheers, and double-dutch jump rope—both reflect and inspire the principles of black popular musicmaking. The Games Black Girls Play illustrates how black musical styles are incorporated into the earliest games African American girls learn—how, in effect, these games contain the DNA of black music. Drawing on interviews, recordings of handclapping games and cheers, and her own observation and memories of gameplaying, Kyra D. Gaunt argues that black girls' games are connected to long traditions of African and African American musicmaking, and that they teach vital musical and social lessons that are carried into adulthood. In this celebration of playground poetry and childhood choreography, she uncovers the surprisingly rich contributions of girls’ play to black popular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s was a time of regeneration and change for Southampton. For children growing up during this decade, life was changing fast. They still made their own toys and earned their own pocket money, but, on new television sets, Andy Pandy (1950) and Bill and Ben (1952) delighted them. With rationing discontinued, confectionary was on the menu again and, for children, Southampton life in the 1950s was sweet. If you saw a Laurel and Hardy performance at The Gaumont Theatre, or made dens out of bombed-out buildings, then you’ll thoroughly enjoy this charming and nostalgic account of the era.

Book excerpt: Listen to what I tell you, son, every word is true The sisters haunt the night, and might fight over you Nothing can steal your soul and stamp it in the mud Like being the new play-pretty for the girls with the games of blood . . . The old song warns of the beautiful Bolade sisters, Patience and Prudence, whose undying rivalry was said to stretch even beyond the grave. But Count Rudolfo Vladimir Zginski has never heard the song. A suave Continental vampire, staked to death more than sixty years ago, he has risen to stalk the Southern nights of Memphis, Tennessee, circa 1975. Although new to the modern world, he has quickly developed a taste for its hot blood, willing women, and high-speed automobiles. Yet the seventies are not without their perils, even for so cunning and ruthless a predator. Zginski's insistent pursuit of a cherry 1973 Mach 1 Ford Mustang soon brings him into conflict with a legendary redneck sheriff with a short temper and a big baseball bat. His dangerous fascination with an enticing undead chanteuse and her equally seductive sister, threatens not only his own ageless existence, but that of the small group of modern-day vampires he has grudgingly taken under his wing. Zginski has already escaped limbo once, but can he free himself from the tangled web of the girls who play games of blood? Alex Bledsoe, author of Blood Groove, returns to he world of the undead with a tale of fast cars and vengeance that never dies. . . . Book excerpt: Her Honor Judith Frick waits, tied to the bedpost, for her husband to come back to bed, but the man who enters in a chickadee mask is not Walter, but an intruder who stuffs a pillow over her face until she blacks out. When she opens her eyes again, the police are swarming through her bedroom and Walter lies dead in the kitchen with a knife in his belly. Lieutenant Patricia Newman holds a grudge against Her Honor for an old case that forced a sergeant off the force, and is determined to arrest the judge for Walter’s murder. Judith turns to her old flame, Jack Stryker, to confirm her taste for bondage. Jack is on disability after a crack-house explosion, but he cannot let it go at that. Assisted by Aisha Adams, a former prostitute, he tries to clear Judith’s name by finding Walter’s killer, a trail that leads him through a real-estate scandal and Walter’s possible infidelity. At the same time, Jack tries to help madam Maggie Malloy, whose working girls are turning up dead. Like Jack and Judith, Maggie and Jack have history—in fact, the same history, of a single night. The link between Her Honor’s case and Maggie’s is the key to the mystery and the only hope of stopping a string of apparently unrelated deaths. To defend Her Honor from a charge of murder and Maggie’s girls from a killer, Jack must recover his vision, both of the case in front of him and the night that changed their lives forever.
