This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is the operation of intersecting discourses of power, privilege and positioning as they are revealed in fraught encounters between in-groups and out-groups in our deeply fractured world. The authors offer a unique perspective on inter-group dynamics and structural violence at local, societal, cultural and global levels, dissecting processes of toxic ‘othering’ and psychosocial (re-)traumatisation. The book offers the Diogenes Paradigm as a unique conceptual tool with which to analyse the ways in which those of us who come to be located outside or on the margins of dominant social structures are, in one way or another, the inheritors of the legacies of centuries of oppression and exclusion. This analysis offers a distinctive psycho-social redefinition of trauma that foregrounds the relationship between the inhospitable environments we generate and the experiences of un-housedness that we thereby perpetuate. Written in an engaging and accessible style, Psycho-social Explorations of Trauma, Exclusion and Violence directly addresses pressing global issues of racial trauma, human mobility and climate disaster, and offers a manifesto for the creative re-imagining of the places and spaces in which conversations about restructuring and reparation can become sustainable. This is an essential and compelling book for anyone committed to social justice, especially for all practitioners working in health, social care and community justice settings, and researchers and academics across the behavioural and social sciences.

Book excerpt: In this unique book, Dr. Richard Chessick asks questions about psychotherapy and answers them. Engaging readers in a dialogue between a senior psychodynamic clinician and novice mental health professionals, one with a particularly medical-biological approach to psychological problems, Dr. Chessick demonstrates how dynamic therapy works and explains the current controversies in the field. Specifically, the discussion—modeled on Galileo's "Dialogues Concerning the Two Chief World Systems"—considers the significance of memories and early experiences, the therapist's input, curative factors, differentiating psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, interpretation, treatment impasse and failure, idealization and transference, borderline states, object relations theories, and the future of the field. Alternative points of view and unresolved issues are highlighted, along with many useful tips for successful clinical practice and case vignettes. This book brings readers to the cutting edge of current thinking in the theory and practice of intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy and highlights the kinds of concerns and problems that are faced by beginning and advanced students as well as seasoned clinicians.

Book excerpt: `I recommend this book to all readers interested in thinking about the self; I am sure that anyone who reads it will come away with some new ideas' - Therapeutic Communities This critical and comprehensive examination of the relation of theory and identity discusses definitions of identity in classical social theory, modern social theory and psychoanalysis. The introduction is a critique of existing sociological accounts of identity, arguing that these are incurably cognitive, treating the people that they study as incapable of experiencing an internal life or internal space. The book then considers the implications of this in social theory and human practice.

The spellbinding finale of the story begins with Jake Goodson and Sam Bailey in jail for the crime of a murder they didn’t commit. The incriminating testimonies and fabricated evidence brought against them are the result of the religious cult’s efforts to destroy them. At first, they seem to succeed. As the two men are left with the daunting task of exonerating themselves and even fighting for their very lives, they relentlessly continue their attempt to rescue the children from the Ekkklesia of Yahoeh. The megalomaniacal leader of the Aryan sect allows his ambitions for power and religious supremacy to draw his followers into battle with all in the outside world who oppose him. While Hightower convinces them that all “outsiders” are in league with the Devil and must be destroyed, he focuses on removing everyone who gets in his way. As a result, he is brought face-to-face with Sam and Jake in a final epic battle. Jake attempts to outflank Hightower by infiltrating the Ekkklesia of Yahoeh, and this has turned on him as he is now immersed in his own rite of exorcism. The brainwashing strategies brought to bear against him invariably drive him deep into the psyche of his personal nightmares in ways that are completely unexpected. As this exciting trilogy concludes, the forces of good and evil are brought into a final showdown as the battle unfolds between the religious cult and the two men trying to rescue their children from its grip.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Freud present a scientific hypothesis about the unconscious, as he always maintained and as many of his disciples keep repeating? This question has long prompted debates concerning the legitimacy and usefulness of psychoanalysis, and it is of utmost importance to Lacanian analysts, whose main project has been to stress Freud's scientific grounding. Here Jacques Bouveresse, a noted authority on Ludwig Wittgenstein, contributes to the debate by turning to this Austrian-born philosopher and contemporary of Freud for a candid assessment of the early issues surrounding psychoanalysis. Wittgenstein, who himself had delivered a devastating critique of traditional philosophy, sympathetically pondered Freud's claim to have produced a scientific theory in proposing a new model of the human psyche. What Wittgenstein recognized--and what Bouveresse so eloquently stresses for today's reader--is that psychoanalysis does not aim to produce a change limited to the intellect but rather seeks to provoke an authentic change of human attitudes. The beauty behind the theory of the unconscious for Wittgenstein is that it breaks away from scientific, causal explanations to offer new forms of thinking and speaking, or rather, a new mythology. Offering a critical view of all the texts in which Wittgenstein mentions Freud, Bouveresse immerses us in the intellectual climate of Vienna in the early part of the twentieth century. Although we come to see why Wittgenstein did not view psychoanalysis as a science proper, we are nonetheless made to feel the philosopher's sense of wonder and respect for the cultural task Freud took on as he found new ways meaningfully to discuss human concerns. Intertwined in this story of Wittgenstein's grappling with the theory of the unconscious is the story of how he came to question the authority of science and of philosophy itself. While aiming primarily at the clarification of Wittgenstein's opinion of Freud, Bouveresse's book can be read as a challenge to the French psychoanalytic school of Lacan and as a provocative commentary on cultural authority.

Download or read book Perversion and Utopia written by Joel Whitebook and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996-10-31 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sweeping challenge to the postmodern critiques of psychoanalysis, Joel Whitebook argues for a reintegration of Freud's uncompromising investigation of the unconscious with the political and philosophical insights of critical theory. Perversion and Utopia follows in the tradition of Herbert Marcuse's Eros and Civilization and Paul Ricoeur's Freud and Philosophy. It expands on these books, however, because of the author's remarkable grasp not only of psychoanalytic studies but also of the contemporary critical climate; Whitebook, a philosopher and a psychoanalyst, writes with equal facility on both Habermas and Freud. A central thesis of Perversion and Utopia is that there is an essential affinity between the utopian impulse and the perverse impulse, in that both reflect a desire to bypass the reality principle that Freud claimed to define the human condition. The book explores the positive and negative aspects of the relationship between these impulses, which are ubiquitous features of human life, and the requirements of civilized social existence. Whitebook steers a course between orthodox psychoanalytic conservatism, which seeks simply to repress the perverse-utopian impulse in the name of social continuity and cohesion, and those forms of Freudo-Marxism, postmodernism, and psychoanalytic feminism that advocate its direct and full expression in the name of emancipation. While he demonstrates the limitations of the current textual approaches to Freud, especially those influenced by Lacan, Whitebook also enlists the lessons of psychoanalysis to counteract the excessive rationalism of the Habermasian brand of critical theory, thus making a substantial contribution to current discussions within critical theory itself. His analysis and interpretation of perversion, narcissism, sublimation, and ego bring new insight to these central and thorny issues in Freud, and his discussions of Adorno, Marcuse, Castoriadis, Habermas, Ricoeur, Lacan, and others are equally penetrating.
