Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY BESTSELLER - HAVE NO SHAME **WINNER** GOLD MEDAL, Southern Fiction, READERS' FAVORITE AWARD **FINALIST** Historical Fiction, READERS' FAVORITE AWARD * Book Club Recommendation * Where civil rights and forbidden love collide... The racially-charged prejudice of the deep South forces eighteen-year-old Alison Tillman to confront societal norms--and her own beliefs--when she discovers the body of a hate crime victim, and the specter of forbidden love turns her safe, comfortable world upside down. A meaningful combination of romantic suspense and coming of age at its very best. "This book will resonate with readers who enjoyed Kathryn Stockett's, THE HELP, Julie Kibler's, CALLING ME HOME, John Grisham's, A TIME TO KILL, Sue Monk Kidd's, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES, and Kathleen Grissom's, THE KITCHEN HOUSE." PLEASE NOTE: This book contains TWO versions of this novel. Readers have the option to read with or without the southern dialect in the narrative (two versions, one novel, one purchase). Both versions reflect the exact same story, with the only difference being the style of the narrative. Q&A with author Melissa Foster Q: How is HAVE NO SHAME different from each of your other novels? MF: I write across genres, and HAVE NO SHAME is my first historical fiction novel. But SHAME is also a coming-of-age story, and so much more. HAVE NO SHAME is told in a very soft voice--the voice of the main character, Alison Tillman, and is reflective of her Southern voice. Q: You've said that this story is your most important story to date. Why is that? MF: HAVE NO SHAME was not an easy book to write. Researching and writing this story took me back to the civil rights era--unearthing all of the hate and prejudice of the times, and it was an eye opening experience. In many ways prejudice is still as strong now as it was then; it's just aimed at other areas of society. Alison's realization of the prejudices of society--and even of those she loves--and the strength she shows in how she moves forward is a lesson for all of us. The heart is not color-blind, and although I know this type of prejudice still exists, I feel it's important to give the truth of that era a voice. Q: Is this a stand-alone novel? MF: Yes, this is a stand-alone novel, however, I'm asked often to write a follow-up novel to explore what happened next in the town and with the characters. I'm looking forward to exploring that soon. Q: You offer this book in two formats with one purchase--why is that? MF: Alison's voice came to me as a southern voice in dialogue and in thought, and HAVE NO SHAME is told from Alison's point of view. I felt it was vital to keep her thoughts in her own voice. However, I also realize that readers are passionate about their reading preferences, and because most novels present dialect in only the dialogue, I decided to give readers a choice. Each ebook and each paperback offers both formats: with Southern dialect in the narrative, and without. This has never been done before. SUMMARY Alison Tillman has called Forrest Town, Arkansas home for the past eighteen years. Her mother's Blue Bonnet meetings, her father toiling night and day on the family farm, and the division of life between the whites and the blacks are all Alison knows. The winter of 1967, just a few months before marrying her high school sweetheart, Alison finds the body of a black man floating in the river, and she begins to view her existence with new perspective. The oppression and hate of the south, the ugliness she once was able to avert her eyes from, now demands her attention. When a secretive friendship with a young black man takes an unexpected romantic turn, Alison is forced to choose between her predetermined future, and the dangerous path that her heart yearns for. NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Melissa Foster is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling and award-winning author. She writes sexy and heartwarming contemporary romance, new adult romance, and women's fiction with emotionally compelling characters that stay with you long after you turn the last page. Book excerpt: "Powerful and poignant.... Newman's message is clear and timely." --The Philadelphia Inquirer In No Shame in My Game, Harvard anthropologist Katherine Newman gives voice to a population for whom work, family, and self-esteem are top priorities despite all the factors that make earning a living next to impossible--minimum wage, lack of child care and health care, and a desperate shortage of even low-paying jobs. By intimately following the lives of nearly 300 inner-city workers and job seekers for two yearsin Harlem, Newman explores a side of poverty often ignored by media and politicians--the working poor. The working poor find dignity in earning a paycheck and shunning the welfare system, arguing that even low-paying jobs give order to their lives. No Shame in My Game gives voice to a misrepresented segment of today's society, and is sure to spark dialogue over the issues surrounding poverty, working and welfare.

Book excerpt: Shame, shame we know your name Do we own it? Being a woman that is. Do we fuck! We live in fear of how we look, what we eat, how we age and what we do. Wow, it's 2022 and we're still churning out that same old shit. I've been told as you get older you care less. Fucking great. I can't wait to be menopausal with skunk-like grey track lines in my hair, saggier tits, and miserable as shit. I don't know about you, but I'd quite like to have that experience - the no-fucks-experience that is - now, before that all happens. To have the confidence to believe in who I am. It's a push we all have to make - whether it be in our confidence over our bodies, who we are as people, or what goes on inside our mind - and we all have to work at it. It's baby steps. So let's take it back to those tiny steps, because all mountains that are climbed don't happen without practice, perseverance, self-belief and a fuck ton of work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work sheds new light on the status, conflicts, and social realities of educated Muslim women in Pakistan. Six candid interviews introduce readers to a class of professional Muslim women that is rarely, if ever, acknowledged in the West. These women tell of conflicts and compromises with family, kin, and community, while facing violence, archaic marriage rules, and locally entrenched codes of conduct. With brave eloquence they speak of human dignity and gender equality, of economic deprivation and social justice, and of feminism and fundamentalism. Challenging stereotypes, No Shame for the Sun reveals the uniqueness of each person and diversity in the life experience of Pakistani Muslim women, including their world views and the struggles to change their society. Through their struggles, professional Pakistani women have become conscious of their own and other women's situations in their country. Because they exercise power and authority in their chosen fields, they risk losing their families' support and antagonizing their communities. Carefully detailed and meticulously researched, this book offers a much-needed perspective on the changing circumstances of Pakistani women along with a view of established patterns and structural constraints within Pakistan. On a broader level, it examines Western misconceptions regarding Islam, a religion that crosses many borders and cultures.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cindy Bailey believes that many women allow shame and embarrassment to cripple their walk with Christ. She has witnessed women who seem to feel that they aren't qualified or "good enough" to use their God-given talents. No Shame refutes that premise and spotlights women in the New Testament who served the Lord boldly and effectively, confident of God's will. Despite the odds against them and their humble backgrounds, these women were not ashamed to repeat an unanswered prayer or rise to God's call. A great study with excellent documentation, this book is perfect for women's groups and adult Sunday school classes, as well as for personal reading and devotion. Cindy Bailey has taken a scary topic (shame) and made it possible for us to face it and conquer it in God's power. Her insightful comments and probing questions help us to evaluate where shame might be lurking in our minds and souls -- and then empower us to grab hold of God's grace and mercy. I love the way she takes biblical characters and applies their lives to struggles (like mine). This guide isn't just for the "shamed" but for everyone. Kathy Collard Miller Popular speaker and author of Why Do I Put So Much Pressure On Myself? In covering an unusual scope and depth of issues important to women of the Bible, Cindy Bailey defines their experiences with spiritual insight and tenderness. Then drawing upon her biblical and contemporary wisdom, she interprets these timeless and valuable lessons for women of the 21st century. Jim Russell Co-founder of the Amy Foundation (Sponsor of the Amy Awards for the best Christian writing for the secular media) Cindy Bailey is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in many Christian and secular publications. In addition to articles in ParentLife, Shining Star, The Secret Place, and Highlights magazines, Bailey has contributed inspirational stories to the anthologies Why Fret That God Stuff? and God's Abundance for Women (Starburst Publishers). In addition, she writes for Waynesburg College and the Greensburg (Pennsylvania) Tribune-Review. For more than two decades, Bailey has served her congregation as a deaconess, pianist, worship leader, adult Sunday School teacher, and women's Bible study leader.

Book excerpt: Alexis’s long-awaited second novel follows his award-winning Childhood. Set in Ottawa during the Mulroney years, Asylum is André Alexis’s sweeping, edged-in-satire, yet deeply serious tale of intertwined lives and fortunes, of politics and vain ambition, of the building of a magnificent prison, of human fallibility, of the search for refuge, of the impossibility of love, and of finding home. Whether he is taking us into the machinations of a government office or into the mysterious workings of the human heart, Alexis is always alert to the humour and the profound truth of any situation. His cast of characters is eccentric and unforgettable, all recognizable in one way or another as aspects of ourselves or people we know well. At the centre of the story, which covers almost a decade, is a visionary project to build an ideal prison, a perfect metaphor for the purest aspects of artistic ambition and for all that is great and flawed in the world. André Alexis is a true original, one of the most talented and astute writers writing in Canada today. This dazzling novel is filled with tragedy, dry wit, intellectual grist. It is playful, linguistically accomplished, and psychologically profound. Its yearnings constitute the highest level of human concerns and pursuits. Alexis has written The Great Canadian Novel, with a twist.
