Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shocking Bestseller: The original version of this astonishing tell - all book spent 73 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, has sold more than 1.25 million copies, and has been translated into 32 languages. New Revelations: Featuring 15 explosive new chapters, this expanded edition of Perkins's classic bestseller brings the story of economic hit men (EHMs) up to date and, chillingly, home to the US. Over 40 percent of the book is new, including chapters identifying today's EHMs and a detailed chronology extensively documenting EHM activity since the first edition was published in 2004. Former economic hit man John Perkins shares new details about the ways he and others cheated countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. Then he reveals how the deadly EHM cancer he helped create has spread far more widely and deeply than ever in the US and everywhere else - to become the dominant system of business, government, and society today. Finally, he gives an insider view of what we each can do to change it. Economic hit men are the shock troops of what Perkins calls the corporatocracy, a vast network of corporations, banks, colluding governments, and the rich and powerful people tied to them. If the EHMs can't maintain the corrupt status quo through nonviolent coercion, the jackal assassins swoop in. The heart of this book is a completely new section, over 100 pages long, that exposes the fact that all the EHM and jackal tools - false economics, false promises, threats, bribes, extortion, debt, deception, coups, assassinations, unbridled military power - are used around the world today exponentially more than during the era Perkins exposed over a decade ago. The material in this new section ranges from the Seychelles, Honduras, Ecuador, and Libya to Turkey, Western Europe, Vietnam, China, and, in perhaps the most unexpected and sinister development, the United States, where the new EHMs - bankers, lobbyists, corporate executives, and others - ''con governments and the public into submitting to policies that make the rich richer and the poor poorer.'' But as dark as the story gets, this reformed EHM also provides hope. Perkins offers a detailed list of specific actions each of us can take to transform what he calls a failing Death Economy into a Life Economy that provides sustainable abundance for all.

Book excerpt: John Perkins has seen the signs of today's economic meltdown before. The subprime mortgage fiascos, the banking industry collapse, the rising tide of unemployment, the shuttering of small businesses across the landscape are all too familiar symptoms of a far greater disease. In his former life as an economic hit man, he was on the front lines both as an observer and a perpetrator of events, once confined only to the third world, that have now sent the United States—and in fact the entire planet—spiraling toward disaster. Here, Perkins pulls back the curtain on the real cause of the current global financial meltdown. He shows how we've been hoodwinked by the CEOs who run the corporatocracy—those few corporations that control the vast amounts of capital, land, and resources around the globe—and the politicians they manipulate. These corporate fat cats, Perkins explains, have sold us all on what he calls predatory capitalism, a misguided form of geopolitics and capitalism that encourages a widespread exploitation of the many to benefit a small number of the already very wealthy. Their arrogance, gluttony, and mismanagement have brought us to this perilous edge. The solution is not a "return to normal." But there is a way out. As Perkins makes clear, we can create a healthy economy that will encourage businesses to act responsibly, not only in the interests of their shareholders and corporate partners (and the lobbyists they have in their pockets), but in the interests of their employees, their customers, the environment, and society at large. We can create a society that fosters a just, sustainable, and safe world for us and our children. Each one of us makes these choices every day, in ways that are clearly spelled out in this book. "We hold the power," he says, "if only we recognize it." Hoodwinked is a powerful polemic that shows not only how we arrived at this precarious point in our history but also what we must do to stop the global tailspin.

Book excerpt: Buy now to get the main key ideas from John Perkins's The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man John Perkins used to cheat countries out of enormous sums of money on behalf of the US government. It was his job, and he was good at it, but its inherent immorality weighed heavily on him. The countries had to spend all their money on repayment, rather than helping their people, and they were firmly in US control. Although he was strongly discouraged from doing so, he published a best-selling expose, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, in 2004. As the same practices spread from government to business, he updated his revelations in The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (2016). It explains how the system works today, what a moral and honest replacement would look like, and how we could all make that happen.

Book excerpt: The riveting third edition of this New York Times bestselling title expands its focus to China, exposes corruption on an international scale, and offers much-needed solutions. Extensively updated, this edition features twelve new chapters, including a new introduction, preface, and study guide. The book brings the story of economic hit men (EHMs) up-to-date and focuses on China’s EHM strategy. EHMs are highly paid professionals who use development loans to cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars and force them to serve US interests. Former economic hit man John Perkins gives an insider view into this system. With a truly global perspective, this book offers powerful revelations on extremely timely elements, including the third economic hit man wave that is sweeping the world and the way China optimizes US EHM models to make them a more dominating force. China’s strategy is even more dangerous since it’s successful at enticing lower income nations. Perkins also reveals how we can transform what he calls a failing Death Economy into a Life Economy. He encourages China’s leaders to apply the Confucian ideal of serving the family to the global community to end the EHM strategy. The book ultimately provides a source of hope and inspires readers to participate in a new era of global cooperation.

Sample Book Insights: #1 I was a twenty-three-year-old volunteer assigned to develop credit and savings cooperatives in communities deep in the Amazon rain forest in Ecuador in 1968. I was shocked by the hovels along the runway. #2 I was assigned to help a group of campesino brick makers in the high Andes. I was told that the brick makers needed to improve the efficiency of their archaic ovens, but they came to me complaining about the men who owned the trucks and warehouses down in the city. #3 I had grown up feeling poor in my boarding school in New Hampshire, but suddenly I was making a great deal of money, traveling first class, and meeting with heads of state. I had it made. #4 I had become so used to my life of luxury that I had begun to take on debt to support it. I had become miserable, and I was operating out of fear - the fear of communism, losing my job, and not having the material things that everyone told me I needed.

This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK I first came across John Perkins's Confessions of an Economic Hit Man a few years ago when I was living and working in Abu Dhabi, a tiny city-state which serves as the capital of a conglomerate of similar city-states—including Dubai—all collectively known as the United Arab Emirates, or the UAE, which itself is located on the eastern coast of the Arabian peninsula. And although the UAE had been peaceful and prosperous for many decades, I couldn’t help but think about the fact that I was in the middle of the most dangerously volatile and highly militarised region on Earth. The year was 2008. The war in Iraq was still rumbling on and, in my more paranoid moments, I thought the conflict could escalate in a flash and instantly embroil other countries in the region. What I did not spend a single moment worrying about, however, was the unprecedented terror caused by the global economic crisis. Who did? I didn’t think about it because, unlike armies, banks and financial institutions are forces of a largely invisible kind of activity. And I never knew finance could cause so much devastation. MEET THE AUTHOR Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. Among the more well known titles he has written for are The Guardian newspaper, Time Out magazine and the International Business Times website. He has edited a number of local and community newspapers, magazines and websites, and has, over the course of his career, worked for some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Emap, LLP and Mirror Group Newspapers. Abdul has also worked outside of the United Kingdom, moving to Abu Dhabi for a year to work on the first national daily newspaper in United Arab Emirates, The National; and he has consulted for media companies in Bangladesh, where he was born. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The job of EHMs (and their colleagues) is to persuade countries to take out loans worth billions of dollars, often to pay for infrastructure projects that the EHMs themselves recommend, writes John Perkins in his book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. If the persuasion tactics of the EHMs fail, the CIA "jackals", as he calls them, take over and often assassinate the leaders of governments who do not co-operate—such as Jaime Roldos, president of Ecuador, and Omar Torrijos, president of Panama. Perkins starts his story by wondering how he had grown up to be involved in such a "dirty business". He remembers Ann, and her uncle, Frank, who suggests working for the NSA and being a Peace Corps Volunteer. Buy a copy to keep reading!

They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign ""aid"" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization.

Book excerpt: John Perkins’ controversial and bestselling exposé, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, revealed for the first time the secret world of economic hit men (EHMs). But Perkins’ Confessions contained only a small piece of this sinister puzzle. The full story is far bigger, deeper, and darker than Perkins’ personal account revealed. Here other EHMs, journalists, and investigators join Perkins to tell their own stories, providing the first probing and expansive look into this pervasive web of systematic corruption. With chapters spotlighting how specific countries around the globe have been subverted, A Game As Old As Empire uncovers the inner workings of the institutions behind these economic manipulations. The contributors detail concrete examples of how the “economic hit man game” is still being played: an officer of an offshore bank hiding hundreds of millions of dollars in stolen money, IMF advisers slashing Ghana’s education and health programs, a mercenary defending a European oil company in Nigeria, a consultant rewriting Iraqi oil law, and executives financing warlords to secure supplies of coltan ore in Congo. Together they show how this system of corruption and plunder operates in real life, and reveal the price that the rest of the world must pay as a result. Most important, A Game As Old As Empire connects the dots, showing how the various pieces of this system come together to create the world’s first truly global empire.
