Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain Receptor Methodologies: Part B Amino Acids. Peptides. Psychoactive Drugs is the second of the two-part first volume of the Neurobiological Research series, which provides a comprehensive view of various subdisciplines within neurobiology. The first volume (Parts A and B) deals with the area of neurotransmitter and neuromodulator receptors in brain; future volumes will cover the subdisciplines of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, brain-specific macromolecules, neurochemistry, and behavioral neurobiology. It is hoped that the series will be of equal value for both basic as well as clinical scientists Part B continues from Part A with the remainder of Section II, specific receptor binding methodologies. Subsection II,B deals with receptors for amino acids and neuropeptides and covers areas including GABA, glycine, carnosine, opiates, bombesin, CCK, TRH, and substance P. Amino acids probably represent the majority of brain neurotransmitter substances, at least relative to the amines and acetylcholine, although with the exception of GABA, the amino acids remain relatively uncharacterized in brain. Their further study should receive high priority.

This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have witnessed the emergence of steroid hormones as the wonder molecules which generate as much discussion in the scientific literature as they do in a typical living room. This transition has been a result of the tremendous public and scientific interest in the normal functioning of the hor mones as well their suggested involvement in several clinical conditions. In the recent past, notable scientific and technological advances have been made in the areas of contraception and regulation of fertility. Steroid receptors are the indis pensable mediators of hormonal responses and are complex protein molecules which appear to exist in association with other, yet undefined, proteins and/or factors. Receptors for vitamin D, retinoic acid and the thyroid hormones share structural similarities with steroid receptors, and the roster of this superfamily is still expanding. While our knowledge of the diversity and magnitude of steroid effects has advanced, the precise mode of steroid hormone action has alluded investigators. This volume brings together an international team of prominent investigators who discuss their most recent work on the basic and clinical aspects of steroid/nuclear receptors. The contributions represent updated versions of the invited presentations made at The Second Meadow Brook Conference on Steroid Receptors in Health and Disease. I am grateful to my colleagues on the Scientific Committee: Etienne Baulieu, Jack Gorski, Benita Katzenellenbogen, David Toft and James WittJiff, who provided the vision and guidance in formulating an out standing program.

Neither did Richard Morgan, together with his partner Big Bob McAlister, when asked to investigate the activities of a suspect , thought to be acting suspiciously in his horse racing activities, would turn out to be the master mind behind the international criminal activities centred around East View House. Neither did Richard realise the fire in him that Susan would ignite, nor the dangers that he and Bob would face, as their investigation takes them to the coastal areas of Suffolk, agricultural Norfolk and across the North Sea to the Netherlands and Germany. From horse race fixing, illegal immigrant workers and under aged trafficking, Richard and Bob investigate, whilst their working partnership goes from Strength to Strength.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Resource Development in Education is a treatise that will be useful not only for the managers, principals, and appraisers but also benefit the teachers by making them aware of their pious duties toward the students and their parents expectations in particular and the entire society in general. This book highlights the significance of providing in-service opportunities for higher education to the teachers and paving effective ways to appraise their efficiency and proficiency thereafter and making further arrangements for their need-based in-service or on-job training if need be for their professional development. It will enlighten the educational managers and administrators to the extent what assignment ought to be given to which teacher for the smooth functioning of the institution so that wastage in terms of time, money, and manpower could be reduced to a great extent. It further highlights the importance of timely feedback for the teacher from the appraiser and for the students from the teachers. The appraisers have been cautioned against the futility of appraisal sans quick feedback to the appraisees. This book studies the positive results and significance of effective leadership, well-spelled objectives of educational management, effects of voluntary collaborative work culture, and role-playing qualities of student-friendly teachers and their capabilities for threadbare self-appraisal, and further guides the teachers effectively. The writer has been a successful teacher and educational administrator. His experiences have enriched this book, and they make its study educative and interesting, prompting the teachers to revisit their methods of teaching and providing in-time feedback to the students. We feel this book will prove to be a milestone in the management of education. But we do not claim it to be a final word. We shall hail a thorough appraisal of this work. Hence suggestions from the academicians are welcome at [email protected]

Book excerpt: A pilgrim spirituality for Holy Land travel, Jerusalem Bound resources the Christian traveler with biblical, historical, and contemporary images of the pilgrim life. Integrating historical sources, on-the-ground experience, and the voices of global pilgrims, Jerusalem Bound presents a fresh approach to pilgrimage, explores pilgrim identity and the Holy Land experience, offers ideas for Holy Land travel, and encourages pilgrims to focus upon the Other as much as themselves. Unique among Holy Land resources, Jerusalem Bound discusses material that is seldom addressed on a Holy Land journey: the motives of Holy Land pilgrims, the history of the Christian Holy Land, understanding the holy sites, pilgrim practices, material objects, and the challenges of Holy Land pilgrimage. Emphasizing the incarnational nature of lived experience, the book encourages pilgrims to derive meaning in both the highs and lows of religious travel. Attentive to the transformational nature of pilgrimage, Jerusalem Bound is ultimately interested in Christian formation and the aftermath of the Holy Land journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular recognition, also known as biorecognition, is the heart of all biological interactions. Originating from protein stretching experiments, dynamic force spectroscopy (DFS) allows for the extraction of detailed information on the unbinding process of biomolecular complexes. It is becoming progressively more important in biochemical studies and is finding wider applications in areas such as biophysics and polymer science. In six chapters, Dynamic Force Spectroscopy and Biomolecular Recognition covers the most recent ideas and advances in the field of DFS applied to biorecognition: Chapter 1: Reviews the basic and novel aspects of biorecognition and discusses the emerging capabilities of single-molecule techniques to disclose kinetic properties and molecular mechanisms usually hidden in bulk measurements Chapter 2: Describes the basic principle of atomic force microsocopy (AFM) and DFS, with particular attention to instrumental and theoretical aspects more strictly related to the study of biomolecules Chapter 3: Overviews the theoretical background in which experimental data taken in nonequilibrum measurements of biomolecular unbinding forces are extrapolated to equilibrium conditions Chapter 4: Reviews the most common and efficient strategies adopted in DFS experiments to immobilize the interacting biomolecules to the AFM tip and to the substrate Chapter 5: Presents and discusses the most representative aspects related to the analysis of DFS data and the challenges of integrating well-defined criteria to calibrate data in automatic routinary procedures Chapter 6: Overviews the most relevant DFS applications to study biorecognition processes, including the biotin/avidin pair, and selected results on various biological complexes, including antigen/antibody, proteins/DNA, and complexes involved in adhesion processes Chapter 7: Summarizes the main results obtained by DFS applied to study biorecognition processes with forthcoming theoretical and experimental advances Although DFS is a widespread, worldwide technique, no books focused on this subject have been available until now. Dynamic Force Spectroscopy and Biomolecular Recognition provides the state of the art of experimental data analysis and theoretical procedures, making it a useful tool for researchers applying DFS to study biorecognition processes.
